'You-Phoria: The Art of Authenticity' Book Review - by Ruth Agnew
"Upon first receiving this book, it is immediately apparent this is not your standard self-help manual, destined to gather dust unread in your bookshelf. This strikingly beautiful hardback features a mirror in the cover, meaning the reader is presented with their own image before delving into Gina Haines’ brilliantly accessible inspirational words. From the outset, it is clear that You-phoria: The Art of Authenticity is about you, the reader, and making the person in the mirror enjoy fulfilment, happiness and joy.
Once I’d actually cracked the spine of You-phoria: The Art of Authenticity, I was charmed by the aesthetics of the page layout. Rather than having to wade through pages of dry text, Haines makes use of easy to read large fonts to separate her ideas into bite sized sections. Bold use of colour and subtle symbology reinforce key ideas, such as the ocean blue background in a chapter that requires deeper philosophical thinking, exploring courage and creating a living theory.
This isn’t a book to read from start to finish and put away. It works in conjunction with Haines’ online courses, but is written in such a way that a reader can access the life changing lessons and complete practical exercises using the text alone. It would be an excellent resource to keep on hand for emotional support when faced with challenges (or, in Haines’ vernacular, “roadblocks”). Haines’ realistic approach to life acknowledges there will be hard times ahead, and offers relatable, practical advice for moving through these challenges.
Just as the mirror on the cover suggested, You-phoria: The Art of Authenticity is about you, and your personal path towards a happier, more authentic self. What makes this book stand out from dime-a-dozen self-help paperbacks is the way Haines uses her own journey to highlight how effectively her steps to happiness can be. Personal anecdotes and metaphors she discovers in day to day interactions are woven throughout the practical steps. The accessibility of her prose makes it an easy, enjoyable read, without the complications of new age jargon or unfamiliar vocabulary.
You-phoria: The Art of Authenticity’s subheading is “How to live courageously, authentically, and seek what your heart desires”. Having read this book, I can truly see that Haines has a gift to help people improve their outlook, and help guide people back towards the pursuit of happiness. It is rare to find true inspiration in the pages of a book, but, as I knew from the minute I set eyes on the cover, You-phoria is different.
Even the most cynical reader would find inspiration in Haines’ words. For those who are searching for inspiration or have lost the sense of joy in their lives, You-phoria: The Art of Authenticity will help illuminate the path to find your own way."
